Whatever Happened to the Movie Video Game?

This game, it seems, was either designed to show off the wildly impressive hardware capabilities of the PS5, or vice versa. Every so often, portals open up to alternate dimensions, shattering the landscape and whipping you through bizarre and disparate planes of reality all without a single load time. Whatever is happening between Ratchet, Clank, the new hero Rivet, Ricket, Glitchmo, Zeezmorph, Scrumpet, and WomboBombo (just guessing names at this point), Rift Apart is some inspired intergalactic chaos. Get unlimited access to Esquire's gaming takes and reviews. The story just feels like an afterthought to me. Between the constant haptic feedback on the DualSense controller and the overwhelming sensation of playing a video game that, as I said before, really feels like you are manipulating a Pixar movie, the sensory overload is utter bliss. Perhaps this is because I’m so distracted by the mind-bending graphics that I find it hard to follow the plot (play it on the best screen you can). I’m not under embargo or anything-I just really have no idea what the fuck is happening in the delightfully unhinged, science-fiction adventure. I wish I could tell you what the hell is going on in Rift Apart. Another game that is purely an expression of joy.

The last time I felt this way was with the Tony Hawk Pro Skater revival back in September. You don’t have to eat the whole pizza, you can just grab a slice.

It’s challenging at times, but those sessions don’t end up lasting more than half an hour or so. Playing a game like Ratchet and Clank, which, sure, is enthralling, but doesn’t twist your head into a migraine, really feels like a relief. So many new titles of this scale today force you to grind for weeks on end (ahem, Demon’s Souls, Returnal), or craft harrowing tales of misery that demand 100 percent of your attention for as long as your brain can survive ( God of War, Last of Us). I think games that are confident enough to let players come in and out as they please deserve more credit. And not just because the graphics are so stunningly vivid that it's as if you’re living inside a Pixar movie. Less than ten minutes into the new Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, it felt like the sun had come out. But Memorial Day weekend was a big rainy bummer, and since I’d already given up on the infinite misery of Returnal, as well as completed the satisfying but nonetheless nightmarishly disturbing Resident Evil: Village, I desperately needed a new game for my stay-at-home vacation. For my money, I always looked to Nintendo for these kind of fuzzy platformers. But when it comes to the majority of PlayStation exclusives ( Last of Us Part II, Returnal, Demon’s Souls, the dreary list goes on and on), we seem to have lost a lot of what originally drew so many of us to gaming: fun! Games should be fun! It is not a bad movie at all, it just should have been better. What if video games were fun? What if, instead of being devoted to dark, gritty, overly moralizing storytelling, or gameplay so difficult that you might spend an entire week on a single boss battle, video games were an expression of joy? The sort of super hardcore games I’m describing by no means represent the entire landscape of gaming today, and there’s a place for those prestige games, no doubt. However, if you are a big fan of the games like I am, I still encourage you to see the movie because there definitely are some enjoyable moments and some funny moments. However, the main issue is that the movie feels more for kids than it is for the fans which is unfortunate. Also I thought the cool weapons from the games were not really showcased enough, not to mention there was hardly any appearances of the famous wrench that Ratchet uses. For that reason I felt like a lot of the humor was much more tame than it is in the games and so therefore a lot of times the jokes just were not funny in the movie. I think the mistake that was made is that the movie was aimed more at kids, most of whom at this point probably have not played the original game (seeing as it came out almost 15 years ago). There are some funny moments in the movie for sure, but it just isn't as funny as the games are. However, my problem is I feel like it should have been better. As a big fan of the games, just seeing those beloved characters in their own movie is really cool. The film at many points captured the spirit of the game well and there are absolutely some great moments in the movie.

Unfortunately it was really average in my opinion.

As a huge fan of the game series I was very excited about this film.
